The project: We wanted to focus on our collaboration and teamwork skills. We created a project that allowed participants to work in groups of all sizes, and to collaborate with artists from a variety of backgrounds and mediums. We also wanted to be able to take our time with this project. The goal was let participants take small artistic bites and chew them slowly.
The theme: For this project, we decided to explore the idea of opposing forces — we wanted to be pulled apart while we were working together. We would decide what "opposing forces" meant to us as a group, once the project had started.
The goal: We wanted to create an exhibition that the public would be able to view. The exhibition would consist of several vignettes, or verses, each of which explored an opposing force. Each verse would be interpreted by multiple groups, and each group would interpret that verse according to one of the following modes: The Thought (silence), The Word (letter-writing or poetry), The Act (sustained motion), The Heart (secrets and subtext).
All participants stayed at the spacious home of Seth and Leah Decker. The Deckers also provided their theater as a workspace and public exhibition area.
