On August 10, 2009, we launched The Dérive Project.  The theme of our first remote project was gaining fresh perspective, and 42 artists working in 18 cities and 2 countries signed on without knowing the assignment or what would be required of them.

After a week of suggested exercises to set the tone, the main assignment was released by email on August 15.  Artists were asked to walk out their front door and go on a dérive.  They were free to collaborate with other artists or work alone, and the assignment itself was to be viewed as a set of guidelines rather than a dictate.  Upon returning home, the artists were encouraged to respond to their experience, and to submit some web-ready version of that response to No One Way by 11:59pm Eastern Time on Monday, August 24th.  There were no restrictions.

This gallery is a showcase of their efforts.
